What is a mailto link?

In this article, you will learn what mailto is and how to use the SAS Mailto Link Generator. According to the Wikipedia page:

mailto is a Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) scheme for email addresses. It is used to create hyperlinks on websites that allow users to send an email to a specific address directly from an HTML document, without the need to copy and paste it into an email client.

In other words, it’s a hyperlink embedded in a document that, when clicked, opens the user’s default mail client (e.g., Gmail) and creates a draft email with the correct parameters, such as:

  • Recipient
  • CC
  • BCC
  • Subject
  • Body

A mailto link can contain one or more of the above parameters.

How to use the Mailto Link Generator

Here we will walk through each field of our tool and give you some tips on how to fill it out.

To or Recipient

The most basic one is the recipient’s email address. It will typically be filled with your own email address or your company’s email address.

CC

This should be filled with the email address of an additional recipient, such as when both the support department and the customer service department need to receive the message.

BCC

BCC is similar to the CC field, but each recipient will not be able to view the email addresses entered as BCC.

Subject

This is like the header of your email, displayed in email notifications and email clients. Here you can enter something like: "Contact about the UX designer job vacancy".

Email Body

The body of the email is the full message you want to send. For a mailto link, it could be some general text that gives you some context, such as: "I read your blog post about UX design services and would like to learn more!"

Link Text

Last but not least: the link text refers not to the email itself, but to the links in general. You can fill it with any text you want, and we will generate an HTML anchor tag with the appropriate mailto link as the attribute!
